July 2007 / Tammuz-Av 5767

Did You Know ...

... that between now and the High Holy Days, we celebrate very few holidays--and none of them joyous.  Other than the Fast of Tammuz and Tisha b'Av, our calendars remain virtually bare.  We do, however, have something subtle, unique and special to celebrate during this non-holiday period:  the start of each new day.

After all, what would there be without it?  The gift of a clean sheet to write upon daily is something only G-d can give and the value of such is immeasurable.  We have a prayer--the Modeh Ani/Modah Ani (for women)--that thanks G-d for restoring our souls to us after the rest of sleep and which marks the start of each day's beginning.  It is only 12 words in length and gives us pause to reflect and give thanks for the greatest of gifts--life.

Why not start a new tradition in your day?  Open the doors to the new day with blessing and gratitude--and make each day a holiday!

Choir

If you are interested in singing with the choir for the High Holy Days, we will begin rehearsals in August.  Please contact Laura Biewer for more information.

Yiddish Expression of the Month

An Ellis Island Story

Fresh from Europe, an immigrant was advised to say that his name was Izzy Itzkowitz.

"What's your name?" the immigrant clerk asked.

"Shoyn fargesn!" (I already forgot!) the man cried out in a panic.  The clerk recorded the man's name:  Shane Ferguson.

Remember, half of every subscription to J- will go to Congregation Beth Shalom.  See your Bulletin for details.

End to Credit Cards

After a six-month trial, we have determined that it is not cost effective for CBS to accept credit cards.  We will no longer be processing automatic dues payments via credit card.

Thank You

Thank you to Lyn Rabinovitz for her help with little jobs around the office, and to Shirley Martinez for her help with the mailing of June bulletin.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with the bulletin.  Please call the CBS office if you are available.

Contributions

Thank you for your donations or contributions.  Please make all checks out to CBS, Congregation Beth Shalom, or USY, and use the memo portion to note the fund you are contributing to.  [The bank is beginning to object to other names on checks.]  Todah Rabbah!

"Get Well" Information Needed

If you know of a congregant who is ill or in the hospital, please help us include them for calls, visits, and the speedy recovery list by letting the office staff know.

Please remember that hospitals are not permitted to share information with the public, including the synagogue.

Are You Getting Our Weekly eMail?

If you are not getting our weekly CBS email, let me tell you what you might be missing.  Our weekly email is sent out on Thursdays, and includes yartzets observed, weekly activities, a Torah summary, congregational "get well" list, and special announcements.

If you would like to be added to this list, please contact Laura Biewer (cbslaurab@sbcglobal.net or 571-6060).  Don't miss another week!
