Digital Storytelling

Dear CBS Family,

Everyone has a story!  It is the countless number of unique and vibrant persons who make up our diverse and always-evolving local Jewish community, and each of them has his/her own richly-filled personal story.  Many of those stories, however, are sadly lost in passing.

Our own resident storytelling expert, Martha Loeffler, and I are setting out to change that, with the assistance of Rabbi Gould.  We want to collect the first-hand accounts of every person who is willing to sit down and share them so that a living record of community members' stories can be maintained.  Once archived, the stories can be shared with others, now and in the future.  This project and process is called digital storytelling.

We want our body of work to be as fully encompassing as possible, and so we are looking for participants who fall into any of the following areas:

  • Current or former members of Congregation Beth Shalom (CBS)
  • Non-CBS members in the community who identify as Jewish
  • Non-Jewish persons who have had strong ties to or relations with the synagogue

Martha has graciously offered to start conducting interviews, and the Rabbi is assisting with helping to spread the word through the synagogue.  We need assistance, however, with audio/visual technology.

We need both technologically current audio/visual equipment, and someone to run the equipment when interviews are conducted.  Do you have access to, or know someone with either up-to-date audio/visual equipment and/or the skills and time to contribute?  If so, please contact me directly so we can begin conducting interviews soon.

Once we start the project, we hope you will consider sharing your own story.

With appreciation,
Keith Highiet

Senior Divas to Perform

Watch for our own Shirley Hausner, when The Senior Divas (Shirley, Marilyn Borden, and Elsie Merenda), perform on Sunday, January 27th at the McHenry Museum.  Show time is 3:00 p.m. and tickets are $15.  The Divas will be singing great standards from the 30's and 40's.  They are backed up by John Wyatt on keyboard, John Ady on bass, and Barbara Borden on drums.

Come and sing along.  It's a great afternoon of entertainment.  Call Shirley for tickets at 521-7581.

Yiddish Word of the Month

sheyn = beautiful / klug = wise / gut = good

Sheynkayt zet men.  Klugshaft hert men.  Gutskayt filt men.

Beauty can be seen.  Wisdom can be heard.  Goodness can be felt.

Remember, half of every subscription to J- will go to Congregation Beth Shalom.  See your Bulletin for details.

Thank You

Thank you to the Kitzmann family for donating the cost of the cleaning of the High Holy Day Torah covers.

Thank you to Lyn Rabinovitz for her help with little jobs around the office.  We are always looking for volunteers to help with the bulletin.  Please call the CBS office if you are available.

Lunch Bunch

The Lunch Bunch has been transformed to our new Lunch & Learn, which began in October.  This is open to all congregants, as we bring a different topic each month.

End to Credit Cards

After a six-month trial, we have determined that it is not cost effective for CBS to accept credit cards.  We will no longer be processing automatic dues payments via credit card.

Contributions

Thank you for your donations or contributions.  Please make all checks out to CBS, Congregation Beth Shalom, or USY, and use the memo portion to note the fund you are contributing to.  [The bank is beginning to object to other names on checks.]  Todah Rabbah!

"Get Well" Information Needed

If you know of a congregant who is ill or in the hospital, please help us include them for calls, visits, and the speedy recovery list by letting the office staff know.

Please remember that hospitals are not permitted to share information with the public, including the synagogue.

Are You Getting Our Weekly eMail?

If you are not getting our weekly CBS email, let me tell you what you might be missing.  Our weekly email is sent out on Thursdays, and includes yartzets observed, weekly activities, a Torah summary, congregational "get well" list, and special announcements.

If you would like to be added to this list, please contact Laura Biewer (cbslaurab@sbcglobal.net or 571-6060).  Don't miss another week!
