ScholarshipsAttention high school seniors and continuing college students! Apply now for scholarships sponsored through CBS; there are 7 different scholarships available. See the Forms page for scholarship guidelines and applications. Application deadline is May 30th. Yom HashoahWe had over 60 people from CBS and our Modesto Community attend the screening of Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust and collected over $400 for the Yad Vashem Names recovery project to ensure no victim is forgotten. This powerful film dealt with the way Hollywood responded to the War from the beginning through today and provoked good questions which came up directly following. Having the local connection with the producer, Daniel Anker, who is Aggie Anker's grandson made it all the more special. The DVD will be available for check-out by members. Anyone who is interested call Laura Biewer. Weekly eMailSign up for the CBS weekly eMail; it includes yartzeits observed, weekly activities, a Torah summary, and special announcements. CBS Jewish University Now In SessionOK, it's not really a university, but it is a place to study Jewish subjects in the curriculum of life, to learn together with your friends and fellow-community members, or just to be together, and we have eight offerings in the process of formation. If you want to participate in any of the "courses" shown below, get out your directory and contact the coordinator by phone, email, postal mail, carrier pigeon, or however you want, but say loudly and clearly, "I want to be in your course." From the RabbiIt's B'nai Mitzvah season. This Shabbat and next Shabbat we celebrate the entry into Jewish adulthood of Austin Kassels and Eva Brotslaw. Now they too can be counted in a minyan, lead services, read from the Torah; just like all the other adult members of our community. We hope to see them as active members of our USY group and welcome them back each year on the anniversary of their Bar and Bat Mitzvah (and lots of other times as well). We are at approximately the half way point in our counting of the Omer. This practice links Pesach, with its message of freedom, to Shavuot, with its message of responsibility. In the spirit of responsibility and life-long learning, we are starting an adult B'nai Mitzvah class. (Organizing meeting this Sunday morning at 9:00, right before Family Fun Day). Next week (May 22) the ritual committee will meet to review candidates for the position of High Holiday cantor. Can the holidays really be just around the corner? Not really, but it will feel that way. On Sunday June 1 Carol and I will be going to "Israel in the Gardens" and hope to see many members of CBS there as well. Look for me in my Cafe Shalom T-shirt. Wear yours, too. The following week we expect to have the traditional ice cream social and study session on Erev Shavuot, Sunday, June 8. if you have ideas on what you would like to study that evening give me a call. There's a lot going on around CBS, come join in the celebrations! Kol tuv,
